BioNTech Names Guido Oelkers Its New CEO

BioNTech has named Guido Oelkers as its new CEO, replacing company cofounder Ugur Sahin, STAT reported on August 3. Oelkers, who previously led Sandoz and other major pharma companies, will take over the German biotech on a date to be announced.

Why the Change

Sahin cofounded BioNTech in 2008 with his wife Ozlem Tureci, and led the company's development of the first mRNA COVID-19 vaccine with Pfizer. The COVID franchise remains BioNTech's largest revenue source, but the company has been working to diversify into oncology and other disease areas. Bringing in Oelkers is intended to accelerate the commercial transition.

Who Is Oelkers

Oelkers is a seasoned pharma executive who has run several major companies, including Sandoz (the Novartis generics business), Nycomed, and most recently a private equity-backed specialty pharma business. He has deep experience in commercial operations, manufacturing, and global pharma - areas where BioNTech has historically been research-led rather than commercial-led.

What's Next

Sahin will remain involved as a scientific advisor and board member. The transition is expected to be smooth, with Oelkers focusing on commercial execution and Sahin continuing to drive research strategy. BioNTech is in late-stage trials for several oncology therapies, including personalized cancer vaccines, and the commercial launch of those products will be Oelkers' first major task.
