SpaceX confirmed on August 15 that Starship Flight 14 — a V3 test mission from Starbase Pad 2 in Boca Chica, Texas — is targeting September 30, 2026, with a potential first orbital booster catch and the first-ever ship catch by the tower, Space Launch Live and NextSpaceflight reported. The same day, the company logged back-to-back Falcon 9 launches, including the USSF-366 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base, extending a record-setting cadence that should put SpaceX past 170 orbital launches in 2026.
What Starship Flight 14 Will Test
Flight 14 is the first Flight using a fully stacked Starship V3 vehicle, with both Super Heavy booster and Ship upgraded to the V3 architecture. SpaceX is targeting a payload-deploy test for the first time, with the upper stage attempting to release a Starlink simulator in orbit before reentering over the Pacific. Pending regulatory approval, the mission will also attempt the first ship catch by the launch tower's chopsticks — a maneuver that, if successful, would slash the marginal cost of orbital flight by an order of magnitude. "Flight 14 is the test we've been building toward since the first V1 hop," SpaceX said in its mission brief.
Falcon 9's Back-to-Back Triumph
August 15's pair of Falcon 9 launches — one from Vandenberg carrying the USSF-366 payload for the U.S. Space Force, and one from Cape Canaveral carrying a Starlink batch — extended SpaceX's record of reflying first-stage boosters. The Vandenberg mission used booster B1069, which has now flown 32 times, the most of any Falcon 9 first stage. SpaceX is on pace to log roughly 170 orbital launches in 2026, up from 134 in 2024 and a fraction of the 11 launches per year it managed as recently as 2019.
The Road to Flight 14
Success on Flight 14 will set up Flight 15 — also targeted for late 2026 — as the first mission to attempt orbital refueling, a critical milestone for the NASA Artemis lunar program and SpaceX's own Mars ambitions. The company's Starship manifest now stands at more than 30 manifested flights through 2027, with NASA, the Department of Defense, and a growing list of private customers signed on. The path from a Boca Chica test pad to a commercially operating heavy-lift vehicle is finally narrowing.
