A defunct SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage has crashed into the Moon, and a Chinese satellite captured video of the impact. South China Morning Post and CGTN reported on August 6 that the collision occurred as predicted, with the rocket debris slamming into the lunar surface on the far side.

The Crash

The discarded upper stage, which weighed about 9,000 pounds (4,082 kilograms), had been drifting in an unstable orbit since its launch years earlier. Space.com reported before the impact that astronomers expected the crash near the Einstein crater on the Moon's far side, and Reuters confirmed afterward that the rocket had crashed into the Moon and kicked up dust.

Chinese Satellite Footage

The unique aspect of this event is the documentation: a Chinese satellite captured video of the rocket debris hitting the Moon, footage that SCMP said provides the first visual record of such a collision. The video allows scientists to study the impact site and the ejecta it produced.

Space Debris Beyond Earth

For years, space debris has been a concern in low Earth orbit. The Moon crash highlights that discarded hardware also poses hazards deeper in space, where there is no tracking or cleanup infrastructure. Astronomers and spacecraft operators will watch whether the impact creates any debris that could threaten future lunar missions, including NASA's Artemis program.
