The global memory chip shortage that has been reshaping the AI infrastructure market has now reached Apple's most popular laptop. The MacBook Air is reportedly in short supply, with Engadget reporting "Ramaggedon" - a portmanteau of RAM and Armageddon - is affecting both availability and pricing.
What's Happening
Multiple retail channels show MacBook Air SKUs out of stock or with extended ship dates. Apple has not publicly commented, but analysts tracking the channel say the issue is DRAM allocation. Apple uses LPDDR memory in the MacBook Air, and the same SKUs are now in high demand for AI servers. Memory suppliers are prioritizing higher-margin AI customers, leaving consumer-electronics OEMs with smaller allocations and longer lead times.
"Not only did MacBook Air prices recently go up, but you couldn't get one today even if you wanted to," Engadget wrote.
Why It Matters
The MacBook Air is Apple's volume laptop, and a sustained shortage would dent Mac revenue in Apple's FY27 Q1. It would also be the first time the memory crunch has reached a tier-one Apple product at scale. Apple's pricing power and long-term supply agreements have so far insulated it from the worst of the shortage, but those buffers are eroding as AI demand continues to outrun supply.
Industry Impact
Apple is not alone. Microsoft has raised Xbox prices in part because of memory costs, and PC OEMs including Dell, HP and Lenovo have flagged tighter margins on consumer laptops. The FT reported Friday that South Korean memory stocks surged 18% as investors priced in continued demand. Memory makers say the tightness will persist at least through 2027, and that consumer-electronics OEMs should expect to compete with hyperscalers for every allocation.
