At the AMD Advancing AI 2026 conference held July 22–23, 2026 in San Francisco, AMD officially launched the MI400 series accelerators, comprising two products: the flagship AI factory card MI455X and the scientific computing card MI430X. This is AMD's strongest frontal challenge to NVIDIA in the data center AI accelerator market.
Core Specifications
The MI400 series uses the new CDNA 5 architecture and debuts the TSMC N2 2nm process. Key parameters:
- MI455X: positioned as the flagship AI factory, with 432GB HBM4 memory and FP8 throughput exceeding 6 PFlops
- MI430X: positioned for scientific computing, with a higher-precision optimization path and support for FP64/FP32 mixed workloads
- Process: TSMC N2 2nm — among the industry's first 2nm AI accelerators
- Interconnect: supports UALink and next-generation Infinity Fabric, with cross-card bandwidth of 1.8TB/s
OpenAI and Meta Commitments
At the launch, AMD CEO Lisa Su publicly announced that OpenAI and Meta have signed adoption commitments for the MI400 series. OpenAI will incorporate MI455X into its next-generation training cluster, while Meta plans to deploy the MI400 series across hyperscale inference infrastructure. The endorsements from the two anchor customers significantly boost MI400's credibility.

Impact on NVIDIA
MI400 is now in the same order of magnitude as the NVIDIA Rubin platform in HBM4 capacity, and shows cost-performance advantages on certain inference workloads. Layered on top of OpenAI and Meta's diversification strategies, this could over time push hyperscale procurement from "single-source" toward "dual-source."
MI500 Roadmap
AMD also disclosed that the MI500 series is expected to ship in 2027, using a more advanced CDNA Next architecture and next-generation HBM specifications. This indicates AMD has built a two-year product cadence to counter NVIDIA's annual refresh cycle.
Supply Chain and Market Reaction
The 432GB HBM4 demand from the MI400 series provides long-term support for SK Hynix's and Samsung's HBM capacity. The day after the event, AMD shares rose about 6%, while NVIDIA shares saw a modest pullback, reflecting the market's initial repricing of the competitive landscape.
