Tesla Optimus Gen-3 Hits Mass Production in Q2, Public Sale Targeted for Late 2026

Tesla has begun serial production of the third-generation Optimus humanoid at its retooled Fremont factory, marking the first time the platform has moved from prototype to volume manufacturing. Internal targets call for 50,000 to 100,000 units in 2026, with Elon Musk confirming at the Davos World Economic Forum that consumer sales will open between late 2026 and 2027.

From Pilot Line to Production Line

Fremont's Body Shop and Model 3 final-assembly lines have been retooled over the past nine months to accommodate humanoid production. Sources briefed on the ramp describe a two-shift operation running roughly 200 units per week at steady state, with bottleneck parts concentrated in the harmonic-drive actuators and the custom Tesla-designed hand.

"The first generation was a science project. Gen-2 was a beta. Gen-3 is the one we can actually build at scale," said one engineering lead familiar with the line.

The Cost Curve

Musk has repeatedly cited a $20,000 bill-of-materials target, a number that would put Optimus in reach of small businesses and affluent households. Achieving it requires the in-house silicon-carbide inverter, custom joint module, and an AI inference computer that Tesla has been vertically integrating since 2024.

The Public-Sale Window

On the Davos stage, Musk framed the late-2026-to-2027 consumer launch as a milestone for the category, not just for Tesla. Analysts caution that the company must still clear safety certification in every major market and prove field reliability in unstructured home environments, neither of which has been demonstrated at scale.

Still, the production data confirms what Tesla's filings have signaled for months: 2026 is the year Optimus stops being a research project and starts being a product.
