Activision closed out the rebooted Modern Warfare trilogy on October 23, 2026, releasing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 at a standard price of $69.99. The game arrives at the end of a difficult stretch for the franchise, following a Black Ops 7 entry that critics and players received poorly, and it has opened to a generally favourable Metacritic score of 84, the best reception the series has had in years.
The launch settles, at least temporarily, one of the most closely watched questions in the games business. Microsoft and Activision chose to sell Modern Warfare 4 as a standalone product rather than place it on Game Pass on day one. Activision has said the game will not join the subscription service until Holiday 2027, which keeps the year's biggest shooter outside the subscription for more than a year after release.
The backdrop is a franchise in need of repair. Third-party tracking data suggested Black Ops 7 had significantly underperformed, with player counts reportedly halving in 12 months. Infinity Ward, the studio behind the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot and its sequel, therefore had two jobs with Modern Warfare 4: restore the review scores, and demonstrate that a full-price Call of Duty can still draw a crowd without a subscription subsidy.
The game itself is a shorter, more cinematic proposition than recent entries, following Captain Price on the run after the events of Modern Warfare 3 and centred on a fictitious invasion of South Korea by North Korea. It also marks a platform milestone, becoming the first Call of Duty to launch on a Nintendo console since 2013, with Digital Legends handling the Switch 2 version.
Key Facts
GamesIndustry.biz reported on October 23, 2026 that the critical consensus placed Modern Warfare 4 at a Metacritic score of 84, describing the reception as a return to form after Black Ops 7. IGN's Simon Cardy praised a genuinely exciting string of missions, Game Informer's Michael Murphy rated the game 8.5/10 and said Infinity Ward had a lot to repair, and The Guardian's Keith Stuart gave it 4/5, calling it a bombastic, thrilling airport novel of a game and citing parkour over Manhattan rooftops, a car chase in Paris and a shootout in a train yard across a roughly six-hour campaign.
The Nintendo release drew particular attention. Nintendo Life's Gavin Lane awarded the Switch 2 version 9/10, noting that the campaign runs at 30fps while multiplayer targets 60fps, and that the port, handled by Digital Legends, supports crossplay and cross-progression. GameBeacon reported on October 24, 2026 that the Standard Edition costs $69.99 on Steam and is also sold on Battle.net, the PlayStation Store, Xbox and the Nintendo eShop, that there is no PS4 or Xbox One version, and that the $99.99 Vault Edition adds the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack with skins for Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix, five Signature weapons, a DMZ deployment bonus and one season of BlackCell. Season 1 begins November 6, when Modern Warfare 4 integrates with Warzone.
Automaton reported on October 23, 2026 that the shared Call of Duty app on Steam, which also carries Warzone and earlier titles, recorded a 24-hour peak of about 142,000 concurrent players, compared with about 27,000 on October 15 before early access began, a roughly 5.3-fold increase. Steam user reviews stood at about 6,000, with 88 percent positive and a Very Positive rating. At launch the multiplayer suite includes 20 maps and 33 weapons, the Kill Block map changes layout every round with more than 500 possible configurations, and new modes include Collateral, Inflation and the large-scale vehicle mode Combat Outpost. DMZ returns for the first time since Modern Warfare II, set in the Hajin exclusion zone, with players extracting supplies and military technology and losing their haul if they fail to extract. The game is on GeForce NOW from day one, and Activision released a C.O.D.E. Valor Pack featuring Medal of Honor recipient Kyle Carpenter, with net proceeds going to the Call of Duty Endowment.
Pixel Herald reported on October 23, 2026 that its Steam tracker had the Call of Duty app at 129,516 concurrent players after a 139,638 peak in the prior 24 hours, up 507 percent from a 23,001 peak a week earlier and the highest reading since tracking began on October 11. The same briefing noted that campaign early access opened for digital pre-orders on October 16 and DMZ early access on October 20, so pre-orderers had the game for a week before the global launch.
XboxDynasty reported on October 25, 2026 that SteamDB data put Modern Warfare 4's peak at 227,622 simultaneous players, with just under 200,000 online at the time of writing. That is about 78,400 players, or 25.6 percent, below the roughly 306,000 concurrent Steam players Black Ops 6 reached on its launch weekend, when it was available on Game Pass day one. The outlet noted the comparison is imperfect because the Steam app aggregates Modern Warfare 4, Black Ops 7 and Warzone, but described it as the most direct like-for-like measure available for the PC audience.
Analysis
The judgement here is straightforward: on the creative question, Infinity Ward delivered. An 84 on Metacritic, a 9/10 for the Switch 2 port, a 4/5 from The Guardian and an 8.5/10 from Game Informer represent a genuine recovery from Black Ops 7, and the DMZ revival has been singled out as the strongest addition in years. The most common complaint, that the campaign runs roughly six hours, is a criticism about quantity rather than quality, which is a far better problem for Activision to have than the reception that met last year's game.
On the commercial question, the picture is more mixed. What this really means is that Microsoft is now running an explicit experiment with two tiers of release: some titles arrive on Game Pass day one, while the largest annual shooter is held back and sold at $69.99, or $99.99 for the Vault Edition, with a subscription arrival pencilled in for Holiday 2027. The Steam peak of 227,622 is enormous in isolation and modest next to Black Ops 6, and the gap of about 25.6 percent is the first hard number attached to that strategy.
The bigger picture here is that review scores and launch reach have moved in opposite directions. The game is better received than its predecessor and appears to have reached fewer PC players at launch, at least on the measure available. That is consistent with the theory that day-one Game Pass availability expands the top of the funnel for a shooter whose monetisation continues long after purchase, and it undercuts the assumption that quality alone determines how many people show up on day one.
Some caution is warranted. The shared Steam app counts players of Warzone and Black Ops 7 alongside Modern Warfare 4, so none of the figures isolate the new game. The 142,000 launch-day reading from Automaton and the 139,638 peak tracked by Pixel Herald also differ from the later 227,622 figure, which indicates how quickly weekend traffic can build. Early complaints about multiplayer time-to-kill, aim assist strength and marksman rifle balance could affect retention in ways launch-day numbers cannot show.
Why It Matters
The stakes are financial and strategic at once. A $69.99 standalone release for the industry's most reliable annual shooter is a direct test of whether full-price Call of Duty buyers will pay rather than wait, and whether Microsoft can run a subscription business while reserving its biggest asset for direct sales. If the model holds through the holiday period, it becomes a template for other large Activision and Microsoft properties.
It also matters for the franchise's repair job. Black Ops 7's reported decline, with player counts said to have halved in 12 months, was a warning that annual releases can lose their audience. Modern Warfare 4 bookends Infinity Ward's rebooted trilogy with the series' best reviews in years, and Season 1 arrives on November 6 with Warzone integration, including the Hajin battle royale map, Modern Warfare 4 weapons and Operators, and the Battle Pass. Warzone support ends on PS4 and Xbox One at that point.
The Nintendo angle may prove just as consequential. Putting a Call of Duty on Switch 2 for the first time since 2013, with crossplay and cross-progression intact, extends the franchise to a platform that did not exist commercially for it a generation ago, and gives Nintendo a marquee third-party shooter in the console's early life.
Next Up
The immediate test is whether the Steam peak holds. Pixel Herald framed the weekend question as whether the high survives the arrival of Grand Theft Auto 6 on November 19, a release that will compete for the same players and the same streaming audience. Season 1 on November 6 gives Activision a second wave of attention before that collision.
Beyond the holidays, the schedule points to Holiday 2027, when Activision has said Modern Warfare 4 will finally join Game Pass. Until then, every subscriber who wants to play must buy the game, and every week of player data will be read as evidence for or against the decision to keep the year's biggest shooter off the subscription at launch.
