Google Kills Standalone AI Studio App, Folding Everything Into Gemini

Google officially canceled its standalone AI Studio app on July 31, folding its capabilities into Gemini, the company's flagship AI assistant that now counts 950 million monthly active users, per The Next Web and industry reports. The move ends the separate developer-facing app as Google consolidates its AI surface area into a single brand.

Consolidation Amid Turmoil

The retirement comes at a delicate moment for Google's model team: reports this week suggested the flagship Gemini 3.5 Pro briefly appeared on the LMArena benchmark for about 30 minutes before being pulled, and the lab has faced delays and researcher departures, including Transformer co-author Noam Shazeer's move to OpenAI. Google's AI efforts are also under investor scrutiny over revenue concentration — UBS estimates OpenAI and Anthropic will account for more than 48% of Google Cloud revenue in 2027, or over $124 billion.

Google is betting that one brand — Gemini — can serve both its 950 million consumer users and the developers who previously opened AI Studio, with existing workflows being migrated into Gemini's developer tools.
