GMO AI & Robotics Corp. unveiled a specially equipped van in Tokyo on September 8, 2026, and named it the GMO Humanoid Ambulance. The company, known as GMO Air and part of the GMO Internet Group, calls the vehicle Japan's first dedicated maintenance vehicle for humanoid robots, a machine built to rush engineers, tools, spare components and a replacement humanoid to the scene when a robot breaks down.
Humanoid robots are moving out of laboratories and showrooms and into workplaces, where a breakdown is no longer a research inconvenience but an operational stoppage. That shift has created a new problem for the companies buying them: a robot that must be shipped back to a service center can disappear for days, leaving a task unstaffed and a customer paying for a machine that is not working.
The vehicle is not autonomous, and it is not a robot repairing another robot by itself. It is a mobile workshop with a human engineer inside. Kyodo News reported on September 8 that the vehicle carries key parts for a humanoid and repair tools, and that an engineer travels onboard to diagnose and repair robots at customer sites. The same report said that if an on-site repair is not possible, the damaged unit can be transported to a repair base while a replacement takes its place.
GMO Air said the service will launch in Tokyo later in September 2026 and will initially maintain humanoid robots that the company itself has introduced. The business was established on June 18, 2024, and applies operating expertise that the GMO Internet Group accumulated over roughly 30 years of running internet infrastructure to what it now calls humanoid infrastructure. The company says it will not treat a robot sale as the end of the relationship.

If a repair cannot be finished on site, the damaged robot can be ferried to a repair base, including the GMO Humanoid Lab Shibuya Showroom, the group's physical AI development site in Tokyo, while the replacement keeps working at the customer's location. Digital Today reported on September 9 that the vehicle also carries consumables and diagnostic equipment, and that the maintenance system stretches from site dispatch to precision repair at the base.
Users can obtain a replacement unit through a subscription priced at 70,000 yen per month, usable for up to a total of 1.5 months a year at no additional cost, according to Digital Today. The vehicle itself is GMO Air's own equipment, and the company decides case by case whether to dispatch it, based on the condition of the robot and its own operating capacity. Exterior and interior design was handled by Yasumichi Morita of GLAMOROUS co., ltd, who drew on ambulance designs from around the world to balance visibility with function.
For now there is a single van, based at GMO's Tokyo headquarters, though the company says it could add more vehicles and bases if demand increases. The wider context is a market in motion. Euronews reported on September 11 that McKinsey estimates the market for general purpose robotics could reach about $370 billion by 2040, and that the Japanese government set a target in June 2026 of introducing around 10 million robots by 2040 across 18 sectors, including healthcare, food services and manufacturing.

What this really means is that the humanoid industry has reached the stage where unglamorous work matters more than the demonstration. A robot that walks onto a stage is a spectacle. A robot that is guaranteed to be back online the same day is a product. GMO Air is not selling agility or artificial intelligence with this van. It is selling uptime, and uptime is the currency that decides whether a factory or a hospital can justify putting a humanoid on the payroll.
The economics behind the decision are not subtle. Interesting Engineering reported on September 13 that a robot in this class costs in the region of 50,000 to 100,000 pounds, and that operators do not want to ship such a machine back to a service center and lose days of operation. When the asset costs that much and its value depends on continuous duty, every idle day is a direct loss. The bigger picture here is that Japan is trying to turn robotics from a manufacturing export into a domestic service industry. The ambulance is not a product in the ordinary sense. It is the visible tip of a support stack that includes a humanoid dispatch service, an online storefront and the Shibuya showroom and lab. GMO Air is betting that whoever owns maintenance owns the customer relationship, in much the way that fleet service contracts once determined which trucks companies bought.
There is also a competitive edge to consider. Euronews reported on September 11 that the launch comes as competition over humanoid robots intensifies between China and the United States. Japan, which dominated an earlier generation of industrial robotics, is not trying to win that race on unit counts alone. Instead it is positioning itself in the unglamorous layer that everyone will need once the hardware race produces winners: after sales care, spare parts logistics and guaranteed operating time.

Robots are only as useful as the uptime they deliver, and Japan's target of roughly 10 million robots by 2040 across 18 sectors is hard to reach if every malfunction triggers a multi-day return to base. Maintenance infrastructure rarely appears in launch videos, yet it decides whether deployments scale or stall. GMO Air is addressing that bottleneck before the volume arrives, which is a different strategy from building a better humanoid.
The subscription angle matters as much as the van. A replacement humanoid at 70,000 yen a month, usable for up to 1.5 months a year, turns an unexpected failure into a predictable cost. For operators weighing whether to deploy a humanoid on a food service line or in a care setting, predictable downtime and predictable billing can matter more than peak performance figures.
It also sets a precedent. If a maintenance vehicle for humanoids proves viable in Tokyo, the same model could travel to warehouses, hospitals and factories elsewhere. The service is starting as a single van in one city, a deliberately small experiment, and its results will show whether robot after sales care can stand as a business in its own right.
