Refractor Games, the developer behind Fifa World Cup: Launch Edition, has laid off roughly 85% of its staff — less than two months after the game shipped.
The Layoffs
Eurogamer reported on August 4 that a vast number of developers at the studio lost their jobs, with affected employees taking to LinkedIn in recent days. Art director Barclay Chantel wrote: "Well, it looks like I'm back on the market looking for a job again. Delphi just pulled the plug on Refactor studios right after we shipped the FIFA World Cup game for Netflix. The entire studio was let go today." GameSpot covered the same story under the headline: "This Game Was Labeled A Success. Its Developer Laid Off 85% Of Staff 2 Months After Release."
The Game
Fifa World Cup: Launch Edition launched June 11, exclusively on Netflix, published by Delphi Interactive — a company with credits on the recently released 007: First Light. The release came at the height of the 2026 World Cup in North America, and the game's availability through a Netflix subscription was meant to widen the audience for the FIFA brand beyond traditional sports-game buyers.
Why It Matters
The layoffs are the latest illustration of a brutal pattern in the games industry: a title can launch successfully — even be called a success — while its studio is dissolved weeks later. Netflix has been building a games operation around its subscription service, and this episode raises questions about how the economics of platform-exclusive sports titles work for the studios that build them. Neither Delphi Interactive nor Netflix has commented publicly on the cuts.
