Three climate stories are converging in 2026 - and their combination is worse than any one of them alone. A 150-year-strength El Niño is forming on top of a record-warm ocean. Canadian wildfires are again pumping smoke across North America. And the global ocean is losing oxygen faster than the decadal average, with new measurements in the tropical Atlantic and Indian Ocean.

The Three Tracks

Track one is El Niño. Sea-surface temperatures in the Niño 3.4 region are 2.4 °C above the 1991-2020 baseline, on track to be the strongest event in ~150 years of records. Track two is wildfire. Canadian fire activity this season is producing smoke plumes that have crossed the Atlantic, dropping air quality across U.S. cities and reaching Europe. Track three is deoxygenation. New autonomous-float data shows oxygen-deficient zones expanding in the tropical Atlantic and Indian Ocean.

"These used to be three separate climate stories. In 2026 they are one story with three heads," said a senior IPCC author.
