Stripe has finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter, the AI model-routing startup that lets developers switch between hundreds of large language models with a single API, for more than $7 billion, Bloomberg first reported on August 16 and Fortune and TechCrunch confirmed. The price represents a roughly fivefold leap over OpenRouter's $1.3 billion Series B valuation set just ten weeks earlier, and ends acquisition talks that the Wall Street Journal first reported last month when Stripe was weighing a $10 billion opening offer.

Why Stripe Is Buying the Routing Layer

OpenRouter acts as a unified gateway to more than 400 models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Mistral and a long tail of open-weight providers, and the company has grown rapidly: AI Weekly reported that its annual recurring revenue climbed from roughly $19 million at the end of 2025 to about $50 million by March 2026. "Stripe was already OpenRouter's payment processor — this acquisition converts an existing billing partnership into ownership of the routing layer," AI Weekly wrote. Initial talks were reportedly priced near $10 billion before summer 2026 model price declines pulled the final figure down.

Building the AI Payment Stack

The deal is the largest in Stripe's history and the clearest signal yet that Patrick Collison's company is moving beyond card processing into the plumbing of agentic commerce. AI agents already drive a growing share of inference traffic, and routing that traffic — charging per token, per agent step, per outcome — sits naturally on top of Stripe's billing rails. "We're not just acquiring a model router; we're acquiring the place where AI applications decide what to call," one person briefed on the deal told Fortune. The acquisition is expected to close in the fourth quarter pending regulatory review.

Competitive Stakes

The deal intensifies Stripe's rivalry with both Visa and Mastercard, which have each launched their own stablecoin and AI-agent payment initiatives in 2026. Mastercard completed its acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure firm BVNK in early August, while Visa introduced its Visa Stablecoin Platform (VSP) on July 16 with an annualized settlement volume of roughly $7 billion. By owning OpenRouter, Stripe positions itself as the financial backbone of the agentic web — a bet that whoever routes the inference also routes the payment.
