Stripe to Acquire OpenRouter for About $7.5 Billion as Fintech Expands Into AI Routing

Stripe announced on August 19 that it plans to acquire OpenRouter, the AI model marketplace that connects applications to large language models across multiple providers, in a deal the New York Times pegged at about $7.5 billion, with $1.5 billion of that allocated to OpenRouter's founders. Stripe CEO Patrick Collison said in a statement that the deal will 'maximize profitability by routing their requests intelligently and spending their tokens efficiently.' Stripe disclosed that the price is roughly 5.8x OpenRouter's last private valuation of about $1.3 billion from a $113 million round closed in May.

Why Stripe Is Buying

Stripe has been working with companies to optimize their AI token costs and route tokens efficiently, but managing AI costs against performance is difficult because the pace at which models are released and repriced is so fast. OpenRouter solves that problem at the routing layer: applications send prompts to OpenRouter, which selects the best model for the workload and price point. Stripe said it plans to combine OpenRouter's routing logic with its billing infrastructure to offer AI cost management as a first-class product line, not just a developer tool. The acquisition extends Stripe's prior AI strategy, which already included the Metronome usage-based billing product acquired earlier this year.

What It Means for AI Labs

OpenRouter said in a blog post that the deal advances its vision of 'a healthy AI ecosystem where many models thrive, where AI neurodiversity is a strength, where a lab or an inference provider with a breakthrough can reach millions of developers, and where no single model becomes the default by inertia.' That framing puts Stripe in opposition to any single AI lab that prefers a default relationship with enterprises, and aligns Stripe with model-agnostic platform positioning similar to how cloud platforms sit above any individual hyperscaler.

Stripe's Wider AI Strategy

The OpenRouter deal is Stripe's largest move into AI after the $1.1 billion acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure firm Bridge in late 2024, and follows Stripe's Treasury launch in Australia on August 19 and continued investment in Metronome. Stripe was valued at close to $160 billion in early 2026 and has become one of the most valuable private companies in the world, with online payment processing its core business. The company now offers payments, billing, fraud, embedded finance, stablecoins, and usage-based AI billing under a single platform, with OpenRouter slotting in as the model-routing layer.

What to Watch Through Year-End

Three checkpoints follow. The deal's closing, expected within months, will require standard regulatory review, and OpenRouter's founders are subject to multi-year retention packages with the $1.5 billion allocation. Stripe's release of an integrated Stripe-AI-Router billing product, expected in Q4 2026, will be the first commercial manifestation of the combination. And competitive responses are likely from hyperscalers and AI labs that today treat AI routing as a strategic customer-acquisition channel: Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments, the autonomous payment service for AI agents that AWS released on August 19, is the first competitor product designed to take on Stripe's AI-billing position.
