Harvey, the legal AI startup, is in talks to raise at least $500 million at a valuation of $15.5 billion, The Information reported on August 7 — a 40% jump from the $11 billion valuation it set just five months ago. Lightspeed Venture Partners is keen to lead the round, according to the report, which was relayed by The Next Web.
Revenue Doubling, Valuation Tripling Pace
The raise follows a surge in revenue. Harvey, founded four years ago, now generates more than $350 million in annualized revenue, up more than 80% from $190 million in January, when it raised $200 million at $11 billion. At $15.5 billion, the new price values the company at roughly 44 times its current revenue run rate — a multiple that assumes the growth keeps coming.
A New Benchmark for Vertical AI
Harvey builds AI assistants trained for legal work — drafting, research, and document analysis — and counts major law firms among its customers. The round would place the four-year-old company among the most valuable private software businesses, above many listed software firms, and cement legal work as one of the most lucrative verticals for applied AI.
Context: An AI Funding Wave
The talks come amid a broad surge in AI venture funding this week. Volta Infra Holdings raised $300 million in equity plus $5 billion in financing at a $2.4 billion valuation with backing from Nvidia, Dell, and Michael Dell on August 4; HappyRobot closed a $150 million Series C at a $1.22 billion valuation led by Prysm Capital and Eurazeo; and UK chip designer OLIX raised a $312 million Series B at a $3.3 billion valuation with participation from Arm and Reed Hastings. Whether Harvey's $15.5 billion bet proves a bargain or a peak is the judgment its next backers must make.
