Google announced on August 6 that it is joining Agent Plugins 1.0.0, an open, vendor-neutral specification for packaging Agent Skills and MCP servers into portable plugins. The company becomes a core maintainer of the standard alongside Amazon, Cursor, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Vercel, and is shipping support in two products starting today.

What Agent Plugins 1.0.0 Does

Published on agent-plugins.org, the 1.0.0 specification defines a way to bundle agent skills, tools, and MCP servers into a single portable plugin format that any compatible coding agent — Antigravity, Gemini CLI, Claude Code, or Cursor — can load. The technical steering committee that published it includes core maintainers from Amazon, Cursor, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Vercel; Google is joining that group, represented by Kevin Hou, according to the Google Developers Blog.

Two Products Ship Support Today

Google's Agents CLI now packages the company's expert skills for agent building, evaluation, deployment, observability, and publishing in the new format, turning any AI coding agent into an agent-ops specialist. Separately, the Data Agent Kit brings Google Data Cloud capabilities — BigQuery, Spanner, and Cloud SQL — into preferred IDEs and coding agents through Agent Plugins-compatible skills and MCP servers.

The Broader Agent Standards Push

The announcement continues a week of agent-tooling standardization: on August 4, Microsoft said the GitHub Copilot Agent is now released and stable for both .NET and Python via Microsoft Agent Framework, letting developers use Copilot's agentic harness as the execution engine for production agents. With Google now inside the Agent Plugins tent, the industry's largest AI platforms have aligned on at least one common packaging format for the agent ecosystem.
