Q1 2026 in the European venture capital market shows a clear "reset": deal counts have fallen significantly, while the average deal size has risen substantially. Tech.eu data shows European tech companies raised a combined €7.5 billion in March and €7.8 billion in February, with quarter-over-quarter momentum stable but internal distribution heavily skewed.

Q1 Key Data

The European Q1 2026 VC market shows three defining features:

  • Fewer deals: compared with Q4 2025, Q1 deal count fell by about 25%
  • Larger average size: the average deal size rose by about 40%, reaching €42 million
  • Higher late-stage share: Series B and later funding rose from 30% to 45% of total

Representative Case: Cloover

German climate-tech company Cloover closed a billion-dollar round, becoming the landmark event of the European market in Q1. Cloover focuses on a distributed renewable-energy financing platform, and its funding reflects the high valuations in the "climate tech + fintech" intersection.

"European LPs in 2026 are more willing to pay up for large, late-stage rounds with verifiable business models." — Atomico partner Sara Viinikainen.

Sector Distribution

Q1 capital primarily flowed into the following directions:

  • AI and Machine Learning: about 28%, including Mistral, H, and others
  • Climate Tech: 22%, boosted by the Cloover mega-round
  • Biotech: 15%
  • Fintech: 12%
  • Other: 23%

Impact on Early-Stage Founders

The decline in deal count is a negative signal for early-stage founders — activity in European seed and Series A rounds has weakened, meaning earlier financing for "non-consensus tracks" has become harder to secure. But for Series B and beyond, market depth has actually improved.

Q2 Outlook

Tech.eu notes that Q2 in European VC may continue Q1 trends, but two variables warrant attention: first, whether AI-sector pullbacks in the US spread to Europe; second, the European Central Bank's interest rate path and its impact on valuation multiples.
