D-Wave and AT&T Announce Quantum Computing Partnership: Network Optimization and Operations

Quantum annealing pioneer D-Wave teams with AT&T to explore how quantum-hybrid computing can optimize telecom network routing, scheduling, and operations at carrier scale.

D-Wave Quantum and AT&T have announced a multi-year partnership to apply quantum-hybrid computing to telecommunications network optimization and operations. The agreement is one of the most concrete moves yet by a major U.S. carrier to explore quantum computing inside production network workflows.

What the Partnership Covers

Under the deal, AT&T will get access to D-Wave's Advantage2 quantum annealers and the company's hybrid solver service. Joint engineering teams will explore three problem classes: real-time traffic routing across AT&T's IP backbone, dynamic spectrum and capacity allocation for 5G and early 6G sites, and workforce-and-fleet scheduling for field technicians.

"Telecom networks are full of NP-hard problems. Quantum-hybrid optimization gives us a tool to attack them at carrier scale," said AT&T's chief network officer.

Why D-Wave, Why Now

D-Wave's annealers are not general-purpose quantum computers, but they excel at combinatorial optimization, exactly the kind of math that dominates telecom planning. The Advantage2 system, shipping in volume this year, offers 4,400+ qubits with a new Zephyr topology that improves connectivity for embedded problems.

AT&T joins a small but growing roster of carriers running quantum pilots. Japan's NTT and Germany's Deutsche Telekom have both published results on routing optimization using gate-model machines. AT&T is the largest U.S. carrier to commit to a sustained program.

What Success Looks Like

Initial benchmarks are modest. AT&T and D-Wave are aiming for measurable improvements in: (1) congestion forecasting accuracy on inter-city fiber routes, (2) energy cost reduction at cell sites through smarter scheduling, and (3) reduction in truck rolls via optimized technician dispatch.

Real Production, Not Demos

Unlike proof-of-concept demos common in the field, AT&T says it plans to put hybrid solvers behind a real-time API that its network operations team can call as part of normal planning workflows. The first production use case is expected to go live in Q4 2026.

For D-Wave, the partnership is a vote of confidence after a year in which the company has pushed hard to demonstrate commercial return on its annealing architecture. For AT&T, it is a way to keep optionality as the quantum ecosystem matures.
