BYD Unveils the Xiao Di Humanoid for Car Dealerships as Figure AI Crosses 1,000 Deployed Units and Tesla Ramps Optimus Gen 3 at Giga Texas

BYD on August 8 publicly unveiled the Xiao Di humanoid for dealership customer-facing work. Figure AI has now deployed more than 1,000 humanoid units to paying customers, and Tesla Optimus Gen 3 is in low-volume ramp at Giga Texas. Chinese electric-vehicle giant BYD on August 8 publicly unveiled its first humanoid robot, named Xiao Di, for early-August deployment at its Di Space experience centers. The debut, confirmed by Notebookcheck and the Chinese EV maker, is part of a broader pattern visible across the humanoid robotics industry this month: Figure AI has now deployed more than 1,000 units to paying customers, Tesla's Optimus Gen 3 is in low-volume production at Giga Texas, AgiBot has surpassed its prior unit count, and Boston Dynamics and Unitree continue to enhance commercial fleets.

What BYD's Xiao Di Does

Xiao Di is designed for customer-facing work in BYD showrooms — greeting visitors, explaining vehicle features, and guiding customers through the configuration process. The robot uses BYD's vertically developed actuator stack, with a custom NVIDIA Jetson Orin compute module running an in-house vision-language-action model. Per BYD's August 8 disclosure, the first deployment will be at the Shenzhen BYD World showroom, with rollouts to additional Di Space centers in Shanghai, Beijing, and Chengdu planned through the end of 2026. BYD framed the launch as a way to 「extend the brand experience into a physical AI surface」 — the same framing Tesla has used for Optimus.

Figure AI's 1,000-Unit Milestone

Figure AI has crossed the 1,000-deployed-units threshold, per the Humanoid Press August 2026 industry update. The deployments span three categories: BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant (where Figure 02 units are performing body-shop tasks), a major logistics customer in the U.S. (where Figure 02 units are doing pick-and-place in fulfillment centers), and a commercial cleaning customer in Japan. Figure's pricing for paid deployments has not been disclosed publicly, but the company's founder Brett Adcock has stated that the per-unit cost has fallen by roughly 60 percent over the past 12 months as the company has shifted to in-house actuator manufacturing.

Tesla's Optimus Gen 3 Ramp

Tesla's Optimus Gen 3 is in low-volume ramp at Giga Texas, handling internal production tasks on the Model Y line. Per the August Humanoid Press update, Optimus Gen 3 features 50 actuators (up from 40 on Gen 2) and 22-DoF hands (up from 11-DoF). Production targets for 2026 remain aggressive, with Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu estimating that the broader humanoid market could reach 200,000 annual sales by 2035 — a number Tesla has stated it targets for 2026 alone. The gap between Tesla's stated production goals and external analyst expectations is the central debate around the program.

The Federal Regulation Overlay

The Federal Communications Commission in late July added advanced foreign-produced robots, including humanoids and quadrupeds, to its list of equipment posing national security concerns — a designation that requires carriers and operators using federal subsidies to remove the listed equipment on a prescribed timeline. The designation directly affects Chinese-origin humanoids including Unitree's lineup. BYD's Xiao Di is not on the FCC list at this point because it is sold only in China; if BYD moves to export the robot to its dealer network in Mexico, the U.S. tariff and FCC posture will need to be navigated separately. The combined effect is that 2026 is the year the humanoid category shifted from 「what can the robot do」 to 「who can buy it, where, and under what rules」 — and August's commercial milestones are the first concrete answer.
