Game Freak's Beast of Reincarnation, the first non-Pokémon project from the Japanese studio in more than two decades, launched worldwide on August 4, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows and Xbox Game Pass, TheGamer and Notebookcheck reported. The action RPG carries a 76 Metacritic score — modest but respectable for a brand-new IP, and a critical test of whether Game Freak can build a parallel identity outside its flagship franchise.
A New IP After 28 Years
Set in Japan in the year 4026, Beast of Reincarnation follows Emma the Sealer and her loyal dog Koo as they navigate a post-apocalyptic land ruined by "corruption." The game blends real-time and turn-based combat, with the dog companion acting as a co-op-style partner in exploration. "It's the first game we've made in 28 years that isn't a Pokémon title — and the first one we've made entirely on Unreal Engine 5," Game Freak said in a launch statement. The shift to a non-Nintendo-led platform — including Xbox Game Pass day one — is itself a milestone for the historically Nintendo-aligned studio.
Critical Reception
Reviews have coalesced around the game's tight combat, the strength of the dog companion system, and the visual ambition of the post-apocalyptic setting. Critics have noted that the opening act is slow and the inventory system is uneven, but the boss-enemy design has been widely praised. "It's the strongest new IP Game Freak has tried to launch in decades, and the best argument for the studio being more than the Pokémon Company," IGN's review wrote. The score lands in the same range as Game Freak's better Pokémon spin-offs and below the mainline Pokémon's 80+ average.
Commercial Stakes
Game Freak, a subsidiary of The Pokémon Company, has been trying to diversify beyond Pikachu for years. The IPO of The Pokémon Company's parent Creatures Inc. is rumored to be in the works, and Beast of Reincarnation's commercial reception will help determine whether the studio can credibly build a second flagship franchise. The game launches into a heavy August 2026 calendar that also includes Star Wars Zero Company, The Sinking City 2, and Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy — competition for gamer attention that will be reflected in August NPD numbers due in mid-September.
