Astranis has unveiled Preceptor, a geostationary satellite designed to inspect, track and maneuver around other spacecraft in the crowded geostationary belt, SpaceNews reported August 13.
Neighborhood Watch in GEO
Preceptor is built around an agile platform capable of close approaches to other satellites — performing inspection passes, monitoring activity and repositioning in response to threats or anomalies. While Astranis is best known for its small geostationary communications satellites, Preceptor signals a push into space-domain awareness, an increasingly contested capability as governments and companies seek to keep watch over the roughly 600 satellites operating in GEO, the orbital arc where most commercial communications assets sit.
Growing Domain Awareness
The announcement lands as space security becomes a priority for the Pentagon and its allies, with dedicated inspection missions — from the U.S. Space Force's X-37B to commercial services — proliferating. Astranis has not disclosed a launch date or customer for Preceptor, but the program underscores how the commercial small-satellite model is migrating from broadband into space defense.
