For the first time, Anthropic has surpassed OpenAI in quarterly revenue, a shift that signals more than just a change in market leadership. According to internal documents viewed by Bloomberg News on August 15, 2026, Anthropic generated $11.5 billion in revenue during the second quarter of 2026, comfortably outpacing OpenAI's $6.7 billion for the same period. The figures, corroborated by Reuters on August 17 and The Information, mark the first quarter Anthropic has also achieved positive adjusted operating income.
The Scale of the Growth
Anthropic's revenue trajectory has moved from $787 million in Q2 2025 to $11.5 billion in Q2 2026, representing a 14-fold year-over-year increase. On a quarter-over-quarter basis the company grew roughly 2.4 times, jumping from $4.73 billion in Q1 2026. With an annualized revenue run-rate reaching $65 billion by the end of July 2026, Anthropic has captured 34.4% of the B2B market versus OpenAI's 32.3%, according to data cited by Forkast.
Enterprise Is the Engine
Enterprise API usage now accounts for 80% to 85% of Anthropic's total revenue mix. Within that, the agentic coding tool Claude Code has emerged as a primary driver, contributing approximately $8 billion to the quarterly total. The pattern confirms a structural shift in enterprise spending, where companies are moving away from simple chat-based interfaces toward autonomous, code-generating workflows with measurable return on investment.
The IPO Clock
This financial momentum arrives as the company prepares for its public debut. Having filed a confidential S-1 on June 1, 2026, Anthropic is targeting an October 2026 IPO with a post-money valuation of $965 billion. With Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan leading the underwriting, the market is pricing in an implied revenue multiple of approximately 15x based on the $65 billion run-rate. The question for investors is no longer whether the company can scale, but whether that multiple can be sustained in a public market increasingly sensitive to the capital expenditures required to maintain frontier models.
Where OpenAI Diverges
OpenAI's recent trajectory, marked by an RL training pause and a focus on safety hardening, suggests a different set of priorities. While OpenAI grapples with the overhead of monitoring and the technical constraints of systems like Astra, Anthropic has monetized the transition to agent-native workflows. The gap between the two strategies is now visible on the balance sheet. Ramp's August 20 data covering more than 70,000 American businesses shows OpenAI's growth accelerating again in Q3 to date — Anthropic held 44% to OpenAI's 40% as of July — but the order-of-magnitude revenue gap established in Q2 will take more than one quarter of share giveback to close.
What to Watch Through Year-End
Three checkpoints follow. Anthropic's October IPO will set the public-market multiple against which OpenAI's expected late-2026 or early-2027 listing will be priced. The competition for Claude Code vs. OpenAI Codex contracts among the largest enterprise software buyers will be a leading indicator of how durable Anthropic's enterprise moat is. And the cost trajectory — Anthropic was reportedly profitable in Q2 but unlikely to repeat the feat in the next two quarters as training and inference capex ramp — will determine whether the 15x multiple holds through the lock-up expiry.
