Valve has launched Deckard, its first new headset since the Index and its first standalone device. Deckard runs a custom Android-based OS for untethered play but streams full-fidelity PC VR titles over a dedicated wireless link.

Two Modes, One Headset

In standalone mode, Deckard runs a curated library of optimized titles at roughly Quest-3 fidelity. Switch to PC mode and the same headset streams SteamVR titles at Index-class quality with sub-15ms latency over Valve's new wireless protocol.

"It is the headset that finally lets you forget about the cable without forgetting about fidelity," one early reviewer wrote.

The Catch

That versatility carries a $1,299 price - well above standalone competitors. Valve is betting that the SteamVR install base and a more comfortable, lighter chassis justify the premium for enthusiasts.

Early software support leans on Half-Life and Steam back-catalog enhancements, with a handful of Deckard-native launch titles.
