P-1 AI closed the initial tranche of a $50 million Series A financing led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA), the company and its counsel Goodwin announced this week. The startup builds «Archie,» an agentic AI engineer for hardware engineering disciplines — mechanical, electrical, thermal, fluids, and systems design — extending the AI-coding-assistant wave from software into physical product development.
Why Hardware Is the Next Frontier
Unlike software, hardware design remains dominated by specialized simulation tools and expert workflows, and most AI assistance so far has stopped at generative CAD drafts. Archie is designed to run multi-step engineering workflows autonomously — proposing, validating, and iterating designs against physics constraints. The round is one of the largest agentic-AI financings this quarter aimed at hardware rather than software, a segment VCs have flagged as underserved.
«Every layer of software engineering now has AI agents; hardware has almost none,» a representative of NEA said in a statement about the investment. The company plans to use the capital to expand its engineering team and build out integrations with commercial CAD and simulation platforms.
