Konami Digital Entertainment launched Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 worldwide on August 27, bringing enhanced versions of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and the Game Boy Color spin-off Metal Gear: Ghost Babel to Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam. The collection is the second installment in Konami's remaster program, following Vol. 1 in 2023.
What's Included
Vol. 2 reintroduces three Metal Gear Solid titles previously locked to legacy hardware. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, originally released in 2008 for PlayStation 3 and never previously ported, is the collection's centerpiece. The remaster adds higher-resolution textures, 4K output on capable hardware, modern control schemes, and Trophy/Achievement support. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, originally a 2010 PlayStation Portable title, is presented with a reworked control scheme and online co-op restored. Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, the 2000 Game Boy Color spin-off, appears as bonus content with a new in-game map and localization upgrades.
The collection also includes the original soundtrack, in-game digital manuals, and a new "Making of" gallery featuring concept art and developer interviews from the original 2004-2010 era. Konami said it has no plans to add microtransactions or paid DLC.
Why It Matters
The Vol. 2 launch resolves one of the longest-running requests from the Metal Gear Solid fan community: a modern re-release of MGS4, which had been confined to PlayStation 3 for 18 years. The original game's bespoke cell-shaded cutscenes, complex AI-driven stealth systems, and divisive ending made it a cult favorite but also a technical nightmare to port, which Konami cited as the reason for the long delay.
The Switch 2 release is particularly significant. Nintendo's hybrid console launched in March 2026 with 11.4 million units sold in its first four months, according to Nintendo's most recent earnings, and Metal Gear Solid is among the most-requested mature-audience franchises for the platform. The Switch 2 SKU includes docked and handheld modes with reduced resolution targets to maintain 60fps.
Industry Context
Konami's remaster program is part of a broader trend of legacy-game re-releases for Switch 2. Nintendo's hybrid has positioned itself as a destination for older AAA and AA titles, with Capcom, Square Enix, Sega, and Atlus all announcing Switch 2 versions of back catalogs. The Switch 2's hardware-accelerated upscaling and 4K dock output have made the platform commercially attractive for publishers seeking to monetize dormant franchises.
The collection also lands amid broader Konami momentum. The company's pro-baseball eFootball series remains a top-10 mobile sports title globally, and Konami's Yu-Gi-Oh! trading-card game continues to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue. The Silent Hill 2 remake shipped more than 4 million units in its first quarter.
What to Watch Through Year-End
Three checkpoints follow. First-week sales data from the UK, Japan, and the US, due in early September, will indicate whether the MGS4 remaster meaningfully expands the franchise's installed base. Konami's announcement of Master Collection Vol. 3, expected at Tokyo Game Show in September, will reveal whether the remaster program will cover Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Metal Gear Solid V, or the original MSX-era Metal Gear titles. And any disclosure of a Metal Gear Solid 4 native-PC port, hinted at by Konami in a Japanese interview in July, will indicate how broadly the company plans to extend the franchise's modern footprint.
