Hyundai Motor Group disclosed in its semiannual report on August 21, 2026 that it will sell its 47.5 percent stake in The Robotics and AI Institute — the Boston Dynamics–adjacent research organization formerly known as the Boston Dynamics AI Institute — to SoftBank. The sale, classified in Hyundai's filing as an asset held for sale, formalizes a strategy shift: Hyundai will concentrate its robotics and physical-AI resources on commercializing the Atlas humanoid through Boston Dynamics, rather than funding a separate long-horizon research entity. Two days earlier, JPMorgan toured Tesla's Fremont factory and confirmed that the recently decommissioned Model S and Model X lines are being retooled to produce the Optimus humanoid robot.
Why Hyundai Is Selling RAI Now
Hyundai acquired a controlling interest in Boston Dynamics in 2021 and subsequently established RAI as an affiliated research body to develop foundational physical-AI capabilities — perception, judgment, learning and mobility — that Boston Dynamics would later integrate into commercial products. The decision to sell the 47.5 percent RAI stake reflects a recognition that long-horizon research is structurally expensive to fund inside a manufacturing-oriented conglomerate. "This move is meant to respond to the physical AI market environment with Boston Dynamics at the core," a Hyundai official said. Boston Dynamics' Atlas humanoid is now scheduled for pilot deployment at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia by year-end, primarily in trim-stage assembly, where Daol Securities estimates Atlas could boost the unit-per-hour production rate by more than 10 percent.
SoftBank's Robotics Bet
SoftBank's acquisition of the RAI stake extends the Japanese conglomerate's deep, decade-long commitment to physical AI. SoftBank retains a 9.65 percent stake in Boston Dynamics through a put option that Hyundai exercised in July 2026. The combined position gives SoftBank a meaningful voice in the foundational research direction of humanoid robotics while letting Hyundai focus capital on commercialization. RAI's research outputs will continue to flow into Boston Dynamics' product roadmap through a separate research-collaboration agreement, Hyundai said.
Tesla's Fremont Pivot
JPMorgan analyst Rajat Gupta toured Tesla's roughly 5-million-square-foot Fremont facility on August 20 and reported to clients that production lines for Optimus are being installed in the area previously occupied by the Model S and Model X lines, which were retired in early May. Tesla remains largely on schedule for the roughly four-month transition target, with initial humanoid deployments in the second half of 2026 expected to focus on Optimus Academy for training and data collection, followed by internal factory use and external sales as early as the second half of 2027. Tesla is targeting roughly 1 million Optimus units per year at Fremont, with a longer-term goal of approximately 10 million units at Giga Texas.
Why Mass Production Is the Real Hurdle
Figure AI founder Brett Adcock, on the My First Million podcast this week, made a related point: "The hard problem is not hardware mass manufacturing. We believe now the most important constraint to really solve is building a really intelligent robot system." Adcock said Figure has now built its 1,000th Figure 03 engineering-validation-test robot and that early commercial customers are already achieving positive ROI in use cases like logistics sorting, where turnover rates exceed 100 percent annually. Figure's recent unedited 200-hour autonomous sorting marathon — 2.9 seconds per package — was a direct replica of a customer's logistics requirement, Adcock said, and is the kind of operational evidence that the broader humanoid market is starting to converge on.
What to Watch Through Year-End
Three checkpoints follow. Boston Dynamics' planned IPO, which Hyundai has indicated could come as early as 2027, will be the first major liquidity event for the humanoid-robotics sector. Tesla's Optimus Academy is expected to release the first public dataset of in-house humanoid-training trajectories by year-end. And the U.S. Federal Communications Commission's July 2026 decision to add foreign-produced humanoid robots to its Covered List will trigger the first compliance filings from Chinese vendors attempting to retain access to the U.S. market.
