A series of benchmark results appearing on Geekbench's public database suggest that Apple's forthcoming M5 Pro chip will deliver a substantial performance leap over the M4 Pro, with particular emphasis on AI and machine learning workloads.
The Numbers
The leaked benchmarks, which appeared briefly before being removed, showed:
- Single-core Geekbench 6: ~4,200 (M4 Pro: ~3,600 — a 17% improvement)
- Multi-core Geekbench 6: ~22,500 (M4 Pro: ~17,500 — a 29% improvement)
- GPU Metal score: ~185,000 (M4 Pro: ~135,000 — a 37% improvement)
- Neural Engine: 48 TOPS (M4 Pro: 16 TOPS — a 3x improvement)
The AI Push
The most significant upgrade appears to be the Neural Engine, which at 48 TOPS would be the most powerful on-device AI accelerator in any consumer laptop. This aligns with Apple's strategy of running AI models locally — a key differentiator from competitors who rely on cloud-based AI processing.
"With 48 TOPS, Apple could run a 7B-parameter language model entirely on-device with real-time performance," said an independent chip analyst. "That's enough for a genuinely useful local AI assistant with zero internet dependency."
Architecture Speculation
Based on the benchmark patterns, analysts believe the M5 Pro uses TSMC's N3P process (an enhanced version of 3nm) and features a 14-core CPU (6 performance + 8 efficiency cores) with a 20-core GPU. The memory interface is expected to support up to 48GB of unified memory with 400 GB/s bandwidth.
Apple is expected to announce the M5 chip family at a fall event, with MacBook Pro models shipping by November 2026. If these benchmarks are accurate, the M5 Pro will make the MacBook Pro the most powerful laptop for on-device AI workloads by a significant margin.
